How-to notes:
Lens: 24-70mm 2.8, Aperture: f14, ISO: 400, Shutter speed: Bulb, Metering: Manual, Format: Raw

First, I mounted the camera on a sturdy tripod, set the camera's ISO to 400 and focused on the action. Then I experimented with different shutter speeds and aperture combinations to find just the right combination of settings. I wanted to capture the fireworks in motion, what some call "painting with light". I ended up settling on a shutter speed setting of b (for bulb) and holding down the shutter release button for an approximate 3 count long exposure. Using the camera's shutter release button when making long exposures like this can cause unwanted movement and result in blurry images. Ideally you'll want to invest in an off camera cable or wireless shutter release to avoid this. I stopped the lens down to an aperture of f14 so that I could make a long exposure and capture the movement of the fireworks but not overexpose the image.

Happy Thanksgiving & Black Friday Photography Sales!
NOV. 25, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope this holiday season brings you every happiness. I love Thanksgiving so much, it's great getting together with friends and family, feasting on amazing food and most of all taking the time to stop and ask ourselves what we each have to be thankful for. It's so easy day-to-day to take things for granted.

When we slow down enough to really examine all the great things in our lives it's pretty amazing how many there are. I'm glad that there's a holiday that helps twist our arms a bit to take stock of the many blessings in our lives. Every year on Thanksgiving day morning I jot down my top ten list of the things I have to be thankful for and I thought I'd share it with you. Please leave comments about the things you're thankful for, I'd love to hear about them.

I'm thankful for…

1. Being blessed with such a wonderful & caring mother.

2. Having a great lady in my life.

3. Sharing 15 amazing years with my girl dog Louisiana, miss you so much!! R.I.P.

4. Having some of the best friends on the planet, you know who you are!

5. Having clients & partners who trust and believe in me, thank you!

6. Making the switch to a healthy lifestyle & sticking with it.

7. My awesome & talented workshop attendees for giving me the opportunity to share with them.

8. The amazing opportunities & experiences that have come my way in 2010.

9. The readers of this blog, I promise to blog more often.

10. Lists that don't go past 10 ;-)

Happy 4th of July Weekend!!
JUL. 5, 2010

Hey guys! I hope everyone had an awesome holiday weekend and enjoyed lots of 4th of July burgers, beer and fireworks!! Here are a few fun images I made last night of Petaluma's fireworks. I've been meaning to photograph the fireworks for years but every year something comes up and I never get around to it. Well this year I finally got it together and made it happen, and I'm glad I did. You be the judge.

Check out my "How I did it" notes below the images to learn how to create your own.

For my post processing I used the following Kubota Image Tools: Daily Multi-Vitamin, curves adjustment layer, levels adjustment layer with contrast boost, KPD Magic Sharp.
